Kitchen Plans

The kitchen in this house looks pretty dated, and it’s a place that I spend a lot of time in so I really want it to be a brighter, happier place. I’m thinking a fun retro vibe, but leaning more towards ice-cream parlour than diner. Cute pastel colours, scalloped edges, candy stripes, glass jars, vintage kitsch-y ornaments. I find it hard to imagine what things will look like without some kind of visual so I did a quick mockup to see what it would be like in different colours and with flat cabinet doors.

  • Walls: Paint a lighter colour.
  • Floor: Leave as is, maybe get a washable rug.
  • Door and drawer fronts: Replace with white slab fronts for modernisation and easier cleaning. Reuse existing hinges. I would have liked minty colour doors but they’re expensive and if I want to sell this house at some point, I’ll probably need a neutral colour.
  • Tiles: Would like to change colour but have read different opinions on how well this lasts – see how it looks after everything else is done then decide.
  • Worktops: Would like to change colour but don’t think it will hold up well, I know I will put hot pans onto vinyl wrapping and ruin it. Save up to replace them with something brighter.
  • Appliances: Save up to replace fridge, freezer. Microwave is not used very much so I would like to replace it with a smaller one.
  • Storage: Replace awkward narrow corner cupboard and drawer with pull-out storage. Declutter and reorganise all cupboard contents.
